WHO Region: African region World Bank Income Group:  Lower-middle-income country Gavi Co-financing Status: Accelerated transition Immunization System Highlights:

  • Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between State governments and immunization partners have moved many northern states with very low immunization coverage toward greater sustainability through phased funding approaches. Through the arrangements, participating States saw their Pentavalent vaccine coverage increase as much as five-fold between 2015 and 2018.
  • Nigeria implements supply-side performance-based financing to improve the quality of care and enhance equity in the delivery of maternal and child health care services, including immunization.
  • Nigeria’s National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), WHO, and other partners have been working with traditional leaders in communities using their recently developed Community Engagement Framework (CEF) to counter vaccine hesitancy.
  • In 2019, the Federal Government of Nigeria released NGN13.75 billion ($38.14 million USD) for the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), which provides financing for a basic package of highly cost-effective interventions, including immunization. This fund is critical for ensuring sustainability of the immunization program as the country transitions from Gavi and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) support.
